PROTECTION TO BRAHMANAS

Qualification Of Brahmana

He must have the quality , samo damah saucam titiksa arjavam, jnanam vijnanam astikyam brahma-karma svabhava-jam [Bg. 18.42]. He must be self-controlled, controlling the mind and the senses. Then very clean, saucam . Satyam saucam . Then titiksa , tolerant; arjavam , very simple. No duplicity. Simple. Arjavam . Jnanam , full knowledge; vijnanam , knowledge applied in practical life. This is vijnanam . Just like we call science. Science means to know the thing correctly, and by practical experiment to understand the things correctly, that is vijnanam . Jnanam means theoretical knowledge, and vijnanam means practical application of the knowledge. Simply if I know "This is the qualification of brahmana ," but there is no practical application, that will not do.

satya sama dama titiksa arjavam

jnanam vijnanam astikyam

brahma - karma svabhava - jam

[Bg. 18.42]

So a brahmana should be truthful in any circumstances. He will never speak lie. Truthful, satya. Sama . Sama means keeping the mind always in equilibrium. And dama , dama means keeping the senses under control. Sama dama titiksa . Titiksa means toleration. There may be so many tribulations, but a brahmana is supposed to be very, very tolerant. Toleration. The first-class example of toleration in the Western country: Lord Jesus Christ. He was being crucified; still, he did not take any steps. If he wanted, he could take steps, but he was tolerating. So this is the sign of brahminical symptom. Titiksa arjava . Arjava means simplicity. A brahmana is not supposed to be crooked and duplicity. No. Simple. It is said even the enemy wants to know something from him, he will clearly say, "It is this." That is called simplicity. Then Jnanam . Jnanam means knowledge, full knowledge. And vijnanam means scientific knowledge, practical application in life. That is called vijnanam . Astikyam . Astikyam means to have full faith in Vedic literature. That is called astikyam . These are the signs of brahmana . So those who are going to be initiated with the sacred thread, they must always remember to follow all these rules and regulations. We should always remember that this Krishna consciousness movement is meant for purifying the human society. Unless the human society is purified, there will be so many problems and disturbances in the human society. At least a certain percentage of the human society must be brahmana ; otherwise the society cannot make any progress in spiritual life. And if we cannot make progress in spiritual life, then our human life is frustrated. After 8,400,000 species of life, evolution, one gets this human form of life. And if he does not properly utilize it, then he is committing suicide.

Brahmana Means Intellectual Class

Education means to understand. Jnani . Educate, educated means wise man, educated man, Jnani . The actual Jnani means mam prapadyate . Bahunam janmanam ante j jnanavan mam prapadyate [Bg. 7.19]. That is education. The education does not mean to become atheist, "There is no God. I am God, you are God, everyone is God." This is not education. This is ajnana . The Mayavadi s, they think that they have become one with God. That is not education. That is described in the Srimad-Bhagavatam : ye ‘nye ‘ravindaksa vimukta-maninah . They are thinking that they have become liberated, but actually, aviçuddha-buddhayaù [SB 10.2.32], their intelligence is not purified. Therefore falsely claiming. If one is God, then how he has become dog? This much common sense there is not. God is God; dog is dog. SP lecture Vrindavana

Spiritual Education is completely absent from modern human civilization. No one understands his real self-interest, which lies with the spirit soul, not with the material body. Education means spiritual education. To work hard in the bodily conception of life, without spiritual education, is to live like an animal. Nayam deho deha-bhajam nr-loke kastan kaman arhate vid-bhujam ye (SB 5.5.1). People are working so hard simply for bodily comforts, without education regarding the spirit soul. Thus they are living in a very risky civilization, for it is a fact that the spirit soul has to transmigrate from one body to another ( tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]). Without spiritual education, people are kept in dark ignorance and do not know what will happen to them after the annihilation of the present body. They are working blindly, and blind leaders are directing them. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanas te ‘pisa-tantryam uru-damni baddhah (SB 7.5.31). A foolish person does not know that he is completely under the bondage of material nature and that after death material nature will impose upon him a certain type of body, which he will have to accept. He does not know that although in his present body he may be a very important man, he may next get the body of an animal or tree because of his ignorant activities in the modes of material nature. SB *.16.19 purport.

The social orders are the brahmana s, the ksatriya s, the vaisya s, and the sudra s; or the intellectual class of men... Brahmana means intellectual class of men—one who devotes his life only in studying Vedas and acquiring knowledge and distributing that. Every time, in every age, there is a class of men who are intellectual class. So this intellectual class of men is called brahmana . And the next class, the administrative class. Those who takes part in politics for administration of the state, government, they are called ksatriya s. The actual meaning of ksatriya is "one who protects a man from being hurt by others." That is called ksatriya . That means, that is the business of the administrators, government. So brahmana , ksatriya , then vaisyas. Vaisyas means productive class who are interested in producing things for consumption by the people. Mercantile class, industrialists, they are called vaisyas. And the last class, fourth class, they are called sudras. Sudras means that they are neither intellectual, nor they're administrator, nor industrial or mercantile, but they can serve others. That's all.

Brahmana very rare

In the modern age, people are being taught in the university to become sudra —neither brahmanas nor ksatriyas nor vaisyas, generally. Because after education, they will have to seek after some service. SP lecture, Boston

The brahmanas are considered to be first-class men, the ksatriyas are considered to be second-class men, and the vaisyas, they are third-class men, and rest, all fourth-class and fifth-class. So at the present moment there is third-class, some, and all fourth-class and fifth-class. There is no first-class and second-class men. So unless they are, at least some of them are first-class men, ideal, the human society is doomed. It cannot be peaceful. There is no brahmana , there is no ksatriya , there is no vaisyas. Maybe a few vaisyas, and all sudras. A brahmana means the good quality, first-class quality. That is very, very rare to be found. SP

Protecting Brahmana

namo brahmanya-devaya

go-brahmana-hitaya ca

jagad-dhitaya krsnaya

govindaya namo namah

"My Lord, You are the well-wisher of the cows and the brahmanas, and You are the well-wisher of the entire human society and world." ( VishnuPurana 1.19.65) The purport is that special mention is given in that prayer for the protection of the cows and the brahmanas. Brahmanas are the symbol of spiritual education , and cows are the symbol of the most valuable food; these two living creatures, the brahmanas and the cows, must be given all protection—that is real advancement of civilization. In modern human society, spiritual knowledge is neglected, and cow killing is encouraged. It is to be understood, then, that human society is advancing in the wrong direction and is clearing the path to its own condemnation. A civilization which guides the citizens to become animals in their next lives is certainly not a human civilization. The present human civilization is, of course, grossly misled by the modes of passion and ignorance. It is a very dangerous age, and all nations should take care to provide the easiest process, Krishna consciousness, to save humanity from the greatest danger. BG 14.16 purport

tat-tranayasrjac casman

doh-sahasrat sahasra-pat

hrdayam tasya hi brahma

TRANSLATION

For the protection of the brahmanas, the thousand-legged Supreme Being created us, the ksatriyas, from His thousand arms. Hence the brahmanas are said to be His heart and the ksatriyas His arms.

PURPORT

Ksatriya s are specifically meant to maintain the brahmana s because if the brahmanas are protected, then the head of civilization is protected. Brahmanas are supposed to be the head of the social body; if the head is clear and has not gone mad, then everything is in proper position. The Lord is described thus: namo brahmanya- devaya go- brahmana - hitaya ca . The purport of this prayer is that the Lord specifically protects the brahmanas and the cows, and then He protects all other members of society ( jagad-dhitaya ). It is His will that universal welfare work depends on the protection of cows and brahmanas; thus brahminical culture and cow protection are the basic principles for human civilization. Ksatriyas are especially meant to protect the brahmanas, as is the supreme will of the Lord: go-brahmana-hitaya ca . As, within the body, the heart is a very important part, so the brahmanas are also the important element in human society. The ksatriya s are more like the whole body; even though the whole body is bigger than the heart, the heart is more important.SB 3.22.4

Accept Brahmana by quality

Similarly, a person born in brahmana family, if his father is actually brahmana , then automatically he is getting the brahminical training at home. This satya, sama , dama , titiksa , arjavam [Bg. 18.42], this qualification. Because naturally the children follow the father. So if the father is a real brahmana , then he naturally becomes. But if by chance he develops the sudra quality, then he must be accepted as sudra , not as a brahmana . That is the sastra . Yad anyatrapi drsyeta tat tenaiva vinirdiset [SB 7.11.35]. If the qualities, brahminical qualities are found somewhere else in sudra or a vaisya , then he should be accepted as brahmana . Similarly if sudra qualities are found in the son of a brahmana , he should be accepted as sudra . It is the quality, not the birth. That is not a fact. They have made it now like that. Because without any qualification, if he can become a brahmana , why he should not take the advantage? That has fallen down the Vedic culture in India, when it came to the caste system. It is not the caste system by birth. In Bhagavad-Gita it is said, "By quality..." guna-karma-vibhagasah. Read that, catur-varnyam mayasrstam guna-karma- vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. Brahmanas: Ayur-vedic physicians , astrologers , teachers and priests .

ara dine jyotisa sarva-jna eka aila

tahare sammana kari' prabhu prasna kaila

TRANSLATION

On another day an astrologer came who was said to know everything—past, present and future. Thus Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu received him with all honor and put this question before him.

PURPORT

Brahmanas generally used to become astrologers, Ayur-vedic physicians, teachers and priests. Although highly learned and respectable, such brahmanas went from door to door to distribute their knowledge. A brahmana would first go to a householder's home to give information about the functions to be performed on a particular tithi , or date, but if there were sickness in the family, the family members would consult the brahmana as a physician, and the brahmana would give instruction and some medicine. Often, since the brahmanas were expert in astrology, people would also be greatly inquisitive about their past, present and future.

Although the brahmana appeared at Lord Caitanya's house as a beggar, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu received him with great respect because he was a qualified brahmana who knew the astrological science perfectly. Although brahmanas would go door to door just like beggars, they were honored as very respectable guests. This was the system in Hindu society five hundred years ago, during the time of Caitanya Mahaprabhu . This system was current even one hundred years ago; even fifty or sixty years ago, when we were children, such brahmanas would visit householders like humble beggars, and people would derive great benefit from the mercy of such brahmanas. The greatest benefit was that a householder could save a great deal of money from being spent on doctor bills because the brahmanas, aside from explaining the past, present and future, could ordinarily cure all kinds of diseases simply by giving instructions and some medicine. Thus no one was bereft of the benefit of a first-class physician, astrologer and priest. The important members of ISKCON should give careful attention to our Dallas school, where children are being taught Sanskrit and English to become perfect brahmanas. If they are actually trained as perfect brahmanas, they can save society from rogues and ruffians; indeed, people can live happily under the protection of qualified brahmanas. Therefore the Bhagavad-Gita (4.13) gives special stress to the division of society ( catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah ). Unfortunately some people are now claiming to be brahmanas simply by birthright, with no qualifications. Therefore the entire society is in chaos.

Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi 17. 103

Charity for Brahmanas

Prabhupada: ...charity is given to the brahmanas. So a man saw that his cow is blind. "All right, give it in charity." So charity means... Charity should be the first-class thing if it is really charity. But nowadays people give in charity just for name. "Oh, I am giving something." This charity... You have read Bhagavad- Gita . There are three kinds of charity: sattvic , rajasic , tamasic . Sattvic , charity in goodness, is with due consideration that "Here should be given the charity." Just like the Vedic injunction is to give charity to the brahmanas. Why? That is the worthy place, to give charity in the hands of brahmanas and Vaisnava. Real brahmanas. I don't say caste brahmana . Because they will employ whatever you give them in the service of the Lord. Therefore charity, that is sattvic charity. There is no question of profit or name. But, "Charity should be given here. Here is something, God's service." That is sattvic . And rajasic means for the sake of name. "Oh, people will say I am so charitable." That is rajasic . And tamasic , one who does not know where the money is going... Just like in the Bowery Street some, that drunkard comes and polishes the motorcar, and somebody gives five dollars, and he immediately goes to drink. That means this charity means give him impetus for drinking. So if charity creates such drunkard, oh, that is very dangerous. He has to suffer, the man who is giving in charity. Therefore in charity also there must be consideration. It must be sattvic . So anyway, it has come here. So it is sattvic . Whatever his mind may be, anyway, he has given to this temple; so it is sattvic . Chant. (end)

Also, if someone accepts charity, he becomes indebted, and that debt has to be repaid, just as borrowed money must be repaid. Therefore devotees should not accept charity from anyone unless they intend to spend it in Krishna 's service. For a devotee to accept donations just to satisfy his belly is a great sin. Brahmanas and sannyasis who accept charity from others must accept it with great caution. According to the Vedic social structure, only the brahmacari , sannyasi , and brahmana are allowed to collect money in charity. An ordinary householder must not. The brahmacari may collect alms from the public for serving his spiritual master, and a sannyasi may collect money for serving God, Krishna . The Vedas likewise direct people to give charity to the brahmanas because they know how to spend it for Krishna . Charity given to a worthy person is in the mode of goodness, charity given for one's own personal benefit is touched with the mode of passion, and charity given without any consideration is sunk in the mode of ignorance. For instance, if we give money to a rascal, he will likely take it to the nearest liquor shop. Those who are rich may think it does not matter—they can afford not to discriminate-but the scriptures describe these three kinds of charity.

The grhastha cannot accept charity. But a grhastha - brahmana , he can accept charity, but he will not, I mean to say, accumulate money by taking charity. Whatever he gets, he must spend. Then dana-pratigraha . Pratigraha means accept. But he cannot keep in bank a bank balance. He must, whatever extra he has got, he must immediately give in charity. Then he can accept, a grhastha - brahmana , accept charity. There is a proverb in Bengali, that "A brahmana , even if he gets one lakh of rupees, one hundred thousands of rupees, still he is a beggar." Because he will not keep it. He will not keep it for... He will immediately distribute it in charity. Therefore he is called in Bengali lakh take baundigi. (?) It doesn't matter he gets one lakh of rupees contribution, but still he remains a beggar. Because immediately he will distribute. So these things are very important things. Yajna-dana-tapah. And for sannyasi and vanaprastha - tapasya. Tapo divyam [SB 5.5.1].

Brahmana Requires Training

So there are first-class men. You train up. Just like a boy is intelligent; still, he requires training in the school, college. Then he maintains his first-class brain, first-class position. So there is first-class man. Now we have to train them properly how to become controller of the mind, how to become controller of the senses, how to become truthful, how to become cleansed internally, externally, how to become full of knowledge, how to try to apply the knowledge in practical life, how to become God conscious. This training is... A first-class man can take up, just like they are taking, all these boys. They had their first-class brain, and now they are being trained up. That is required, trained up first-class men. That training is required.

There are stages: sudra , dvija , vipra , and brahmana . These four steps. One is born a sudra . Sudra means the lowest class, almost animal. So anyone who is born of father and mother, he is accepted as sudra . And janmana jayate sudraù . By birth, everyone is born a sudra , the lower class. And samskarad bhaved dvijah. And if that man, the boy, or the child, is reformed by education gradually, then he is, samskarad bhaved dvijah, his second birth is there. So amongst the higher class, the brahmanas, the ksatriyas, and the vaisyas, especially amongst the brahmanas and ksatriya , the boys were trained very nicely. Very nicely. So by reformation, when the boy is, I mean to say, mature, at the age of twelve years or thirteen years, he goes automatically to a spiritual master. He automatically goes to a spiritual master for becoming initiated. Just like sometimes some students come to me also: "Swamiji, get me..." That is the process. When one understands the importance of spiritual life, that is reformation. So automatically he offers to a learned person to accept him as his disciple. That point is, acceptance of a disciple, is the second birth. He is called dvija . Dvi means second, and ja means janma , or life. So samskarad bhaved dvijah. Dvija , second life, means reformation and acceptance of spiritual master. Then education, spiritual education, begins. And what is that spiritual education? The Vedic literature, just like Bhagavad- Gita , Srimad-Bhagavatam , Vedanta . There are many. Especially Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam .

So one... When one has educated himself sufficiently in the Vedic literature, he is called vipra . SP lecture San Francisco

There are many departmental institutions for giving education just like medical, engineering, legal, administrative etc. But there is no educational institution where real ideal Brahma nas are educated according to Srimad-Bhagavatam brahminical culture, or to educate a certain section as ideal, perfect persons is essential in human society.

Brahmana Requires Help other Varnas

So it was the business of the king to see that things are going on. First of all, there is classification: intelligent class or brahmana ; and the administrator class or ksatriya ; and the mercantile class, money-producing class. So everyone is engaged, and he's doing his own business. But this division must be there. Without division the society will be in chaos. The example is given... I have several times mentioned that, that just like in this body, there is division: the head division, the arms division, the belly division, and the leg division. They are all required. You cannot say that simply legs will do. What about the head and arms? "I don't require." That is not... That is dead body. That is dead body. Any part of the body, you cannot miss. They must be all in order; then your body is fit. Similarly, in the human society, the social body, there must be these classes: the head class, the arm class, the belly class and the leg class. Very scientific. You cannot simply... If you have got intelligent class of men, but nobody is helping him, then what, what will be the use of intelligence? The intelligent class must be there, but to help him the less intelligent class men also required. Just like if there are only intelligent class, that will be chaos. Nobody will care for anyone. Sometimes we'll find in our society, all intelligent class, and they fight each other. That's all. Everyone is thinking, "I am intelligent. I am boss. I must order you." And the other is thinking, "Why you shall be boss? I am also boss." So (laughs) fighting will go on. So this is going on. At the present moment there is no intelligent class of men. But kalau sudra -sambhavah. Therefore things are all in chaos. Everywhere you go, any part of the world, nobody is happy, either in family or community and society, nationwide, you take. Everyone is distrust, unhappiness, godlessness. Because the intelligent class of men is finished. SP Lecture, Los Angeles

Adharma , unbalance society, Brahmana could not survive

A brahmana is not expected to serve anyone. A ksatriya is not expected to serve anyone, nor the vaisyas. Only the sudras. But in this age, because there are not balance in society, everyone is after employment—without employment he cannot survive—therefore it is said, kalau sudra sambhava . In the Kali-yuga...

Lecture “Climate chaos and peak oil are converging with a third crisis – the food crisis. The food crisis results from the combined impacts of the industrialization and globalization of agriculture….The real solution must be to search for right living…right living is “ dharma ”… Ecological balance and social justice are intrinsic to right livelihood, to dharma . “ Dharanath dharma ucyat ” – that which sustains all species of life and helps maintain harmonious relationships among them is “ dharma ”. That which disturbs the balance and her species is “ Adharma ” BRSM

Cow protection , brahminical culture and God consciousness .

As stated by Srila Prabhupada, ‘every state and every home must endeavor to advance the cause of brahminical culture for self-purification, God consciousness for self-realization and cow protection for getting sufficient milk and the best food to continue a perfect civilization. Cow protection means feeding the brahminical culture, which leads towards God consciousness, and thus perfection of human civilization is achieved'. (SB 1.19.4).

The ideal setting for introducing this natural life-style is in the rural areas, the villages. The Vedas consider the family unit as the sacred and necessary institution for the up-keep of a balanced society. Similarly, the system of four varnas and four asramas, based on local organization, local economics and local governance, should likewise be seen as the sacred and necessary institution for the up-keep of a peaceful and prosperous nation.

The activities of Lord Krishna Himself teach us these basic principles of “ Simple Living and High Thinking ”. Indeed ‘when Lord Krishna appeared, He purposefully became a cowherd boy and showed personally how to give protection to the cows and calves. Similarly, He showed respect to Sudama Vipra , a real brahmana. From the Lord's personal activities, human society should learn how to give protection specifically to the brahmanas and cows. Then the protection of religious principles, fulfillment of the aim of life and protection of Vedic knowledge can be achieved. Without protection of cows, brahminical culture cannot be maintained; and without brahminical culture, the aim of life cannot be fulfilled. The Lord, therefore, is described as go-brahmana-hitaya because His incarnation is only for the protection of the cows and brahmanas '. (SB 8.24.6)

Srila Prabhupada has given the following guidelines to facilitate such a style of living: “ produce only what you need… use only what you can produce ” .

*** Bhismadeva ***

Devavratah is son of Maharaja Santanu and Gangadevi. One day, Maharaja Santanu met Satyavati, daughter of Dasaraja and fall in love with her. Maharaja Santanu would like to marry thus he met her father and asked about it. Dasaraja have one condition that Satyavati son must be the prince enthroned as the next king. Maharaja Santanu cant fulfill this condition because he has determined Prince Devavratah as the next king of Hastinapura. Satyavati too had pined for many days, praying to the gods to arrange her union with the king. Then one day, unknown to Santanu, Devavratah appeared at their hut to solicit her hand on the emperor’s behalf. Dasaraja repeated his condition and Devavratah agreed. He would never ascend Hastinapura’s throne; the crown could go to Satyavati’s children. Still her father hesitated. He had heard enough about court intrigues to know that if Devavratah relinquished the throne, then Devavratah’s children might feel cheated and oppose Satyavati’s son. The fisher-king voiced his doubts. Hearing them, Devavratah uttered a terrible vow. He would never accept a wife but would maintain life-long celibacy. In order to secure his father’s happiness, he said, he was ready to renounce all personal enjoyment. Satyavati now recalled that when Devavratah made that vow, flowers had rained from the sky and a thunderous voice had echoed from the heavens: “From this day his name shall be Bhisma, one of a terrible vow.”
Bhismadeva have been blessed by his father, Maharaja Santanu, to determine the death time. Then Bhismadeva become the Kuru's elder at the time of Great War between Kaurava and Pandava. Because of his vow to guard whoever on the Hastinapura throne, in this war he used to be Kaurava's troops leader. He was no longer able to lead the troops after being hurted so that his body full of arrows, lie down on it. Before his departure from this material world, there so many great personalities present. Almost every famous sage from all parts of the universe had now arrived. There was Parvata, Narada, Vyasadeva, Bharadvaja, Parasurama, Asita, Gautama, Atri, Kasyapa, Angirasha and many others, all of them shining like sacrificial fires. Also present there Pandavas and Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, Lord Krishna.

The 'Ot mee-an bay hoap dtay' day

Several days ago when we were in the Yashodapura Ashram Farm, in Prasat Village, Chub Te Trav Commune, we used to have talking with one family who stay there. His name is Ngun. He said that last few month is time when villager are 'ot mee-an baay hoap' which literally mean have no rice to eat. We also saw one old lady peeling wild tubers to cook. She said about the same thing. They are now in scarcity of food.

What villagers do? We saw that commonly the villagers at this time would like to look for labor work like 'youk l'bach damloung' or pull out the weeds in cassava/tapioka plantation in some project nearby. They will earn 10,000 riel per day by working in this way. The two groups of three men choose their own way to earn money on these days of 'food scarcity'. They looking for 'khnyoong', a kind of expensive wood. They looking around here and there. One group got around 1 metre the root of this wood meanwhile one more group got nothing although they had worked on it for the last two days.

In Srimad Bhagavad-Gita 3.14 Lord Krishna said to Arjuna:

annad bhavanti bhutani
parjanyad anna-sambhavah
yajnad bhavati parjanyo
yajnah karma-samudbhavah

All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance of yajna [sacrifice], and yajna is born of prescribed duties.

On the purport of this sloka Srila Prabhupada explain "therefore, one who cannot perform them(yajna/sacrifice-red) will find himself in scarcity—that is the law of nature. Yajna, specifically the sankirrtana-yajna prescribed for this age, must therefore be performed to save us at least from scarcity of food supply. "

What is sankirtana-yajna? Sankirtana means “complete glorification”. The word is derived from two Sanskrit words, samyak (complete) and kirtana (glorification). Thus the method by which the Lord is completely glorified and by which people can come into contact with His devotional service is known as Sankirtana.
