Bull driven Mohte for irrigation
This year farmers in the Udupi district noticed many climatic changes. In the mids of the rainy season there was sunshine for few days at a stretch. These kinds of changes are very damaging to the crops. With the lack of sufficient rains this season, the paddy fields were dry.
Devotees working on Mohte
Most of the farmers managed to protect their crops with electric pump irrigation. We don't have electric pump at SSKBK which is contrary to the Varnasrama principle of not being dependent on electricity. The fields went dry and the crops started drying as well. Devotees prayed intensely for the rains and began to hold Hare Krishna Kirtana near the field everyday.

We also set on the path to try the traditional way of irrigation using animal power. The best traditional alternative was to implement the Mohte system of irrigation. We had already done the research on that but had not implemented the same. We first tried with Circular Mohte, on the well that is near the rice fields. But we could not successfully implement it. So we started to search out for some Mohte system that is already implemented.

Giriraj Prabhu's village of Suraram in Andhra Pradesh had working linear Mohte set up. With the help and guidance of Giriraja Prabhu's father and other relatives from his village we set up the same system at SSKBK. We will not be surprised if this is probably the only working Mohte system in the whole of Karnataka.
